The Tidewater School

Tidewater School History

The Tidewater School was started as a non-profit, Montessori Early Childhood Program in 1986 in direct response to the need in Calvert County for a developmentally appropriate and educationally respectful environment for young children. Nancy Libertini, our founder, developed the model for Tidewater based upon her knowledge and experience as a speech-language pathologist, early childhood educator, counselor, and parent of a Montessori-educated child.

As the school matured, families longed to see their children stay in a nurturing, affirming, and stimulating environment. Through the dedication of a volunteer Board of Trustees, The Tidewater School expanded its curriculum in 1995 to include a Montessori elementary program, purchased and moved into our current location. Over the years, the building was renovated several times and now boasts four charming, light-filled classrooms, a rich library, working kitchen, a delightful and engaging playground, nature trail, playing field, and gardens.
