Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
Montessori education was conceived as an aid to life and a vehicle for peace and justice. This call is fundamental to the Tidewater School’s work and is the root of our foundational belief that children are unique individuals with different backgrounds, gifts, talents, and identities. It is with this guiding principle in mind that we deliberately and intentionally support the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
In the words of Dr. Maria Montessori
“The child is endowed with unknown powers, which can guide us to a radiant future. If what we really want is a new world, then education must take as its aim the development of these hidden possibilities.”
In that spirit, Tidewater School aims to strengthen its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging by working to break down barriers that cause injustice and taking a stand for equity. As a community, Tidewater School commits to creating a culture of belonging by cultivating a deep understanding of all school members where everyone feels valued for who they are and welcome to share their unique gifts, talents, and perspectives. We strive to create and embrace diversity in our work to fulfill our mission of guiding our students to be compassionate, responsible, and empowered citizens of the world.
